What is a SEAT EC Certificate of Conformity?

The SEAT EC Certificate of Conformity is the official document confirming that your vehicle complies with the applicable EU safety and environmental standards. It demonstrates to the registration authority that your SEAT conforms to a vehicle type with European type approval.

If the document is unavailable, an individual vehicle approval and an inspection by the relevant approval authority or an authorised technical service may be required.

When you order your SEAT COC certificate, you receive the official technical data required to prepare the vehicle registration document. This includes precise information about CO₂ emissions and the emissions category, which may be necessary when calculating vehicle tax for models such as the SEAT Leon, Ibiza and the popular Ateca SUV.

What technical data does the SEAT Certificate of Conformity contain?

Whether you own a SEAT Ibiza, Arona, Tarraco, Alhambra or a SEAT Leon from the 5F model series, the SEAT Certificate of Conformity contains the following technical information, which may be missing or shown only in abbreviated form in foreign vehicle documents:

  • Identification: Complete Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), brand, exact type designation, variant, version and the EC type-approval number required for import registration.
  • Engine details: Detailed information on engine code, displacement, fuel type, such as petrol, diesel, CNG/TGI, hybrid or electric, as well as maximum net power in kW.
  • Dimensions and weights: Exact vehicle dimensions, length, width and height, kerb weight, actual vehicle mass and technically permissible maximum mass. For SEAT models with a tow bar, the specific towing capacities, braked and unbraked, and the nose weight are also listed.
  • Emissions & taxes: Specific CO₂ values according to the WLTP test procedure, or NEDC for older models, and the exact emissions standard, such as Euro 6d-TEMP or Euro 6e. This information is essential for the correct calculation of vehicle tax.
  • Tyres: A detailed list of all factory-approved wheel and tyre combinations. This may help avoid additional inspection costs for alternative wheel and tyre combinations.
  • Additional data: Official colour code, number of seats, stationary and driving noise levels in dB(A), and the maximum design speed.

Where can you find the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your SEAT?

To request your COC online successfully, we need the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). You can find it here:

  1. In the registration certificate: In field “E” of your vehicle registration document.
  2. Windscreen: Visible from the outside at the lower left-hand side.
  3. Boot: Often on a type plate or sticker with vehicle data near the spare wheel well.
  4. Engine compartment: Engraved directly on the suspension strut tower or bulkhead.

Important note: Enter the VIN without spaces when placing your order. Pay special attention not to confuse the letter “O” with the number “0” to ensure processing without delays.

Frequently asked questions about SEAT COC certificates

My vehicle is a CUPRA. Do I need a SEAT COC certificate?

The determining factor is the make shown in your vehicle documents. If the documents state CUPRA, order the certificate through our CUPRA page. If they state SEAT, you are in the right place.

There is little difference regarding the document itself: in both cases, the manufacturer and holder of the EU type approval is SEAT S.A. in Martorell.

My SEAT was first registered in Spain. Are the Spanish vehicle documents sufficient for registration?

The Spanish Ficha Técnica, also known as the Tarjeta ITV, does not replace the EC Certificate of Conformity. Depending on the country in which you intend to register the vehicle, the competent authority may still require the original COC or an equivalent technical document.

As Spain is an EU Member State, importing the vehicle into another EU country does not normally require customs-clearance evidence applicable to vehicles arriving from outside the EU.

The type-approval number shown on a SEAT COC normally begins with e9. This country code indicates that the European type approval was granted in Spain.

How can I tell whether my SEAT Leon belongs to the 5F model series?

The third-generation SEAT Leon uses the type designation 5F. This is not merely an internal factory designation. The vehicle type forms part of the “type, variant and version” information shown on the Certificate of Conformity and may also appear in the corresponding field of the vehicle registration document.

The exact sequence displayed depends on the specific variant and version of your vehicle.

Are COC certificates still available for a SEAT Marbella, Ronda or Málaga?

The decisive factor is not the model itself but the date of first registration. European whole-vehicle type approval, together with the Certificate of Conformity, became compulsory for new passenger cars after the transition period established by Directive 92/53/EEC ended on 31 December 1997.

For this reason, a COC is generally unavailable for older SEAT models. Depending on the vehicle and the country of registration, alternatives may include a technical data confirmation from the manufacturer, an individual vehicle approval or a technical inspection report.
